In the north of the country and surrounded by verdant jungle, the active Arenal volcano is also a spectacular vision. During the day, walk along lava trails that were shaped after an eruption in 1968, and at night, zip lining can be arranged so that you can admire the glowing red lava bubble whilst swooping from terrific heights. Below Arenal lake lies more of Costa Rica’s enigmatic scenery. Monteverde’s cloud forest contains over 400 types of birds including the sacred resplendent quetzal, and more than 500 types of orchid which can be explored walking through mist on suspended bridges amongst the treetops.
